When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer? A Boise Parent's Guide
If you're expecting a baby, one of the first questions you may have about newborn photography is also one of the simplest: when should we actually schedule the photos?
You've probably seen photographers mention a very specific newborn window—often somewhere in the first two weeks after birth. There is a reason those early days are popular, but there isn't a single date on the calendar when beautiful newborn photographs suddenly stop being possible.
At Studio4one5, we think of newborn timing as a guide, not a deadline. The right time depends on the photographs you want, how your baby is doing, how you're recovering, and what feels manageable for your family.
The classic newborn photography window: about 5–14 days
For the sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits many families picture when they think of newborn photography, roughly 5–14 days after birth is often an ideal window. Newborns spend a great deal of their early lives sleeping—the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that newborns commonly sleep around 16–17 hours a day, although usually in short stretches.

Those early days can make it easier to photograph the tiny, tucked-in details of this stage while also giving us plenty of time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and simply letting baby set the pace.
But 14 days is not an expiration date
This matters enough to say clearly: if your baby is already two weeks old, you have not missed newborn photos.

At three or four weeks, babies may be more alert and may spend more of the session looking around, stretching, or interacting with you. That doesn't make the photographs less meaningful. It simply changes the story we're photographing.
For Studio4one5, newborn photography isn't only about getting a baby into a particular pose. It's also about the way they fit against your chest, the scale of their hand around your finger, the expression on an older sibling's face, and the quiet moments happening while your family learns this new version of itself.
When should you actually book your newborn photographer?
Ideally, before your baby arrives.
Booking during pregnancy lets us reserve space around your due date without pretending babies follow calendars. Once your baby arrives, we can choose the actual session date based on their birth date, your recovery, and how everyone is doing.
It also means one less thing to research and arrange while you're navigating those first sleep-deprived days at home.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
That's normal—and exactly why we don't treat your due date like a fixed appointment. Your due date helps us plan. Your baby's arrival tells us when it's actually time to photograph.
If your baby arrives early, needs additional medical care, or your family simply needs more time before a session, the priority is your baby's health and your family's comfort. We adjust. There is no photograph important enough to rush recovery or ignore medical guidance.
What about feeding, naps, and a fussy baby?
Newborn sessions need room to breathe. Babies eat frequently, sleep in short stretches, and do not care about anyone's photography schedule. That's expected.

We build newborn sessions around feeding, soothing, changing, and breaks rather than expecting a brand-new baby to cooperate with a rigid timeline. You don't need to apologize because your baby needs to eat, cries, wakes up, or needs to be held.
What if my baby's skin changes before the session?
Newborn skin changes quickly, too. Flaking, redness, tiny scratches, milia, and baby acne can all show up during those first weeks. If that's something you're worried about, we put together a separate guide on baby acne and newborn photos.
So, what's the best age for newborn photos?
If you want the classic sleepy newborn look, aim for approximately 5–14 days after birth. If that window doesn't work for your family, don't panic. Beautiful, connected newborn photographs are still possible after two weeks, and the best session is ultimately one that respects your baby and your family.
The most useful thing you can do is reach out during pregnancy. We'll talk through your due date, the kind of photographs you're drawn to, and what you want this chapter to feel like when you look back on it years from now.
