Baby Acne and Newborn Photos: What Parents Should Know
You waited months to meet this little person. And then, somewhere in those first few weeks, you notice it: tiny red or white bumps appearing across those brand-new cheeks.
Baby acne is incredibly common—and if you have newborn photos coming up, it can also leave you wondering whether you should postpone your session. The short answer? Probably not.
Baby acne is usually temporary, and it’s one of many completely normal parts of having a brand-new baby. More importantly, there’s a reason we generally recommend photographing newborns fairly early after birth.
What is baby acne?
Baby acne typically looks like small red or white bumps, often appearing on a baby’s cheeks, forehead, chin, neck, chest, or back. It commonly begins around 2–4 weeks after birth.
It can also be easy to confuse baby acne with other common newborn skin conditions. Milia, for example, are the tiny white bumps many babies have on their faces. Another similar-looking condition is neonatal cephalic pustulosis.
In other words: newborn skin doesn’t always look like the perfectly smooth skin we see in advertisements. That’s normal.
Why does baby acne happen?
The answer is a little more complicated than you might expect. Baby acne has traditionally been associated with hormones a baby is exposed to before birth. Pediatric sources also note that what has often been called baby acne may overlap with a normal response to microorganisms on a newborn’s skin.
Whatever the exact mechanism, it isn’t something parents have done wrong—and it isn’t the same thing as typical teenage acne. Most cases resolve on their own and generally disappear without scarring.
Should you try to clear baby acne before newborn photos?
This is one of those situations where gentle is better. Don’t scrub or squeeze the bumps, and don’t reach for adult acne treatments. If you’re considering any over-the-counter treatment, check with your baby’s healthcare team first.
If you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing actually is baby acne—or you’re concerned about your baby’s skin—your pediatrician should be the one to evaluate it. From the photography side, though, a few little bumps don’t make your baby any less ready to be photographed.
Should I postpone newborn photos because of baby acne?
Usually, we wouldn’t postpone a newborn session simply because baby’s skin isn’t perfectly clear. Newborn babies have flaky skin, little bumps, redness, birthmarks, scratches, and all sorts of tiny details that remind us just how new they are. Some of those things disappear remarkably quickly.
At Studio4one5, our goal isn’t to make your baby look like a different baby. It’s to photograph this incredibly brief chapter of your family’s life beautifully and authentically. And waiting several weeks for baby’s skin to change can mean missing another window that’s much harder to get back.
So, when is the best time for newborn photos?

Interestingly, that’s also before baby acne commonly appears at around 2–4 weeks. But 5–14 days isn’t an expiration date.
If your baby is three weeks old, four weeks old, or you’ve already passed that traditional newborn window, please don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity. The session may look a little different—and your baby may be more alert—but there are still beautiful photographs to make.
