Best Outdoor Family Photo Locations Near Boise, Idaho

The Treasure Valley is one of the most underrated places in the country to raise a family — and honestly, one of the most beautiful places to photograph one. Between the golden foothills, the Boise River winding through it all, and those long Idaho summer evenings that seem to stretch the light forever, we are spoiled for stunning backdrops out here.
I get asked all the time: where should we do our family photos? It's one of my favorite questions. After photographing families across the Treasure Valley, I've built a pretty solid list of go-to spots — and a few that I think are genuinely underused. Here are five of my favorites.
Eagle Island State Park — Eagle, ID
This one is close to my heart right now because I just wrapped a session here with the sweetest five-year-old, and the images are absolutely stunning. Eagle Island is a 545-acre state park just west of Boise, bordered on both sides by the Boise River — which means you get that lush, green, riparian feel without driving more than 20 minutes from the city.
What makes it magical for family photography is the variety. Open grassy areas for running kids (and five-year-olds who will absolutely run), tree-lined trails with dappled light, and riverfront spots that go absolutely golden at sunset. It's relaxed, it's spacious, and there's enough for kids to explore that they forget there's even a camera around — which is exactly when the best photos happen.
Pro tip: aim for the hour before sunset. The light through the cottonwood trees is something else entirely.
Kathryn Albertson Park — Boise, ID
Don't let the fact that this park sits right in the middle of Boise fool you — the moment you step inside, it feels like you've left the city entirely. Tall wild grasses, ponds, enormous old trees, and wandering wildlife make this one of the most naturally beautiful locations in the valley.
I love this spot for families who want something that feels raw and unhurried. It photographs beautifully in every season, and the variety within the park means we can move through several different looks in a single session. One thing to keep in mind: it can get busy on peak weekend afternoons, so I always recommend a weekday evening booking here.
Boise Foothills / Lower Hulls Gulch — Boise, ID

If you're willing to put in a short drive for something truly spectacular, the Boise Foothills deliver every single time. Lower Hulls Gulch in particular has trails, open ridge views, and that wide-open Idaho sky that makes you feel like the whole landscape belongs to your family alone.
Summer golden hour up here is breathtaking — the warm light hits the hillsides and everything glows. It's a bit of a hike to the best spots, but for families with older kids or adventurous little ones, this location produces some of the most epic family portraits you'll find anywhere in the Treasure Valley.
The Boise Depot — Boise, ID
This is my wildcard recommendation, and it consistently surprises families who hadn't considered it. The Boise Depot offers something rare: architectural beauty and natural softness in the same session. You've got the iconic white stone building with its archways and Spanish tile roof, open grassy areas for movement and connection, and a garden pond that catches light beautifully in the late afternoon.
The best part? You don't have to pack up the kids and drive across town for variety — it's all right there. I especially love this location for families with younger children because it's flat, easy to navigate, and there are a dozen different backdrops within a short walk of each other.
Wilson Ponds — Nampa, ID

Wilson Ponds is one of Treasure Valley's best-kept secrets for family photography, and I want more families to know about it. Located in the Nampa area, this spot offers something distinctly Idaho — Russian Olive trees with their soft silver-green foliage, tall overgrown grasses, and a quiet, unhurried feel that you just can't find at the more popular spots.
As fall approaches and the grasses turn to warm brown and amber tones, Wilson Ponds becomes genuinely extraordinary. It's especially great for families who want something a little different — less manicured, more authentic, and completely stunning in photos.
